I've never really understood the infield fly rule

But crazy me, I always thought it at least involved a fly ball had to at least be in the relative proximity of the infield.

But then who am I, just some crazy guy who believes in evolution, climate change, and the BLS.

Here's a link to the replay:

The essence of the infield fly rule is to prevent the possibility that the infielder could deliberately drop the ball to create a double play. Didn't look too likely from the replay. But it did look like a fairly easy catch for the shortstop, who was playing deep. By that standard, not a great call, but not necessarily a bad one, either.

It also looks likely the shortstop backed off after hearing the left field line umpire's voice behind him calling the batter out, mistaking that voice to be the left fielder behind him waving him off.

Unfortunate, but if the umpire had not made the call, it looks like the shortstop wouldn't have flinched, and the result would have been the same. Except the Braves fans would be b*tching about something else.

I haven't forgotten David Shotkoski. I've been on strike since March 24, 1995, and I don't miss it. Baseball owners, fans and players all deserve each other.

Actually the standard is that the fly ball can be caught by an infielder with "ordinary effort", and not that the ball actually be in or within any distance of the infield.
