The One Reason

...You should not discuss politics with your colleagues is not because you'll discover that you're on opposite sides of the fence, but because you'll discover just how ignorant they are. It's scary.

do tell. what did your colleague say?

Agree, it is always scary to discover these things. And then have to be polite and act as if their point of view is reasonable instead of batshit crazy.

Or alternatively having to watch your back from then on because your coworker has decided that your views are 'a menace to the workplace' and that they need to get you fired.
That being the primary reason why I don't discuss the fact that I'm aethist in a heavily mormon workplace.

Oh, yes! I'm totally boxed in where I work. It's mostly white, conservative, Catholic, middle class women and I am a liberal Democrat atheist. I have my own personal policy to never discuss religion and politics there.

I literally had to bite my tongue one afternoon when one of our senior-age women confided that she was terrified of what Obama was going to "do to them". She said she was worried about the Death Panels and losing her health care.

While I would have preferred to shake her until her little gray head rattled, I calmly said, "I don't think it's going to be that bad. You'll have to wait and see."

I bite my tongue A LOT there.

I once laughed at Huckabee because he doesn't believe in evolution. a coworker said "I don't either". Me and another coworker kind of gave each other a "wha" look.
I didn't know how to act around her after that.

Postsecret.com has a postcard this week that says "I've always considered myself superior to all my Republicans friends, and I always will."

I'm all, that's no secret around my work place.

I just tell them "sorry, but ignorant really just doesn't cut it for me."

I've passed the age where I have colleagues to worry about--those to properly fear because of their position, so I am free to rebuke them with such retorts as these:
I worked in a hospital surgery and listened to all the repuke doctors say when medicare was passed how medicine was doomed. And they went on to make money like they'd never dreamed of.
Or,when I really want to piss them off: I love socialized medicine, don't you like having medicare? Shouldn't everyone?
It has been a godsend for Me! vox

Ahhh yes....the insular world of the social sciences where doctrine faces no test and all that present opposing opinion and/or reason are aggressively ostrasized.
Dr Dick feels safe in this environment even though the world of reality just doiesn't seem to cooperate with his world of leftist fantasy.

Ahh yes...the douchebag so enamored with his own self-importance that he has to show up in every thread and try to cram everyone into his retarded comic-book simpleton view of the world...whose closest experience with an actual academic environment is listening to a college dropout drug addict on the radio tell him how to think.

@9:23PM

"ostracized" not "ostrasized"

"doesn't" not "doiesn't"

With respect to low IQ, pot's calling the kettle black.
