Quote of the Day

Bob Herbert:

When you see surveillance videos of some creep mugging an elderly person in an elevator or apartment lobby, the universal reaction is outrage. But when the fat cats and the ideologues want to hack away at the lifeline of Social Security, they are treated somehow as respectable, even enlightened members of the society.

We need a reality check. Attacking Social Security is both cruel and unnecessary. It needs to stop.

Of course, the overwhelming majority of the nation, including conservatives do not want to cut Social Security benefits...it just isn't felt that way amongst the Republicans in Congress and in Think Tanks, nor amongst too many Democrats in the same places. Nor, of course, amongst the Villagers who party with them.

Conservative is an honorable tradition. These people aren't conservatives. They're un-American radicals hell-bent on destroying the government so they can pay less tax.

Was it Woody Guthrie or Bob Dylan who said: "Some folks rob you with a gun, others with a fountain pen."---?

Conservative nowadays doesn't seem to mean conserving anything. Nowadays it means that the rich and powerful should be able to do whatever the fuck they like, regardless of the law or the consequences to the rest of us...

...and as Leone Helmsley once said, "Taxes are for the little people, not us."

Since Social Security is for the little people, too, they don't give a shit about it. In fact, destroying it destroys people's faith in both government and the entire concept, of, well, social security.

But they wouldn't have the guts to strangle it publicly on television, they'll have to take it behind a screen for some bogus makeover treatment and then they can give it the death of a thousand cuts.

And the braying jackals like OnAn will be leading the pompom brigade, even as their own benefits are cut..."Wow, look: I got a $1.98 tax cut!"

and don't call it class warfare. that's only when the poor steal from the rich.

Call it class warfare, because it is.
Tell the R's to drop their health care if they intend to disable the Affordable Health Care Act.
Tell them Social Security is off limits.
Learn to riot in the streets like they've done in Cairo, today, Tunisia, yesterday, and get a voice that demands attention and respect.

Susie Madrak has a post on it at her place.
