Way to go Papacy

After all this time, of course, this is no surprise but the clarity and starkness of it all is still shocking:

A newly revealed 1997 letter from the Vatican warned Ireland's Catholic bishops not to report all suspected child-abuse cases to police...

...The letter undermines persistent Vatican claims, particularly when seeking to defend itself in U.S. lawsuits, that the church in Rome never instructed local bishops to withhold evidence or suspicion of crimes from police.

A letter attempting to make such allegations internal church matters only is pretty much the opposite of what the Church has been saying in lawsuits throughout the world, particularly in the U.S. on the matter.

In the Church's defense, "ass-covering" is not necessarily in the 10-commandments if you read them like Scalia reads the Constitution.

From the NYT:
“It refers to a situation that we’ve now moved beyond,” Father Lombardi said. “That approach has been surpassed, including its ideas about collaborating with civil authorities.”
Ego te absolvo a peccatis tuis in nomine Patris, et Filii, et Spiritus Sancti. Amen.

Does seem to run counter to that "thous shalt not bear false witness" thing, however. Not sure even Scalia could get around that one.

Ah, what's the big deal, Jesus was probably a child molester, too, just like all these Catholic leaders down through the ages.

As the old saying goes, "Not all religious people are hypocrites, but all hypocrites are religious."

BTW, I assume everybody's heard about the new Gov. of Alabama's remarks about only Christians being his brothers?

He's probably a child molester, too.

at abu garib, it was a few bad apples, not us leaders whodunit..
at Wichita, it was a gunman who acted alone and killed Tiller, not our conspiracy whodunit...
at Tucson it was a deranged young 9MM glockman who decided to obey Glen Beck's godgiven command to kill the democrat socialists, not Glen Beck or others like him
at Rome, apparently, there were no bad apples, lone gunmen or deranged glockmen at the top of the pile to pass the buck to, only the papacy itself can no longer be infallible
