Mr. Romney....seems to be betting that voters have no memories, poor arithmetic skills and a general inability to look behind the curtain. We hope the results Tuesday prove him wrong.

It's called knowing Mitt's toast and trying to buy a shred of cred at the last minute. Chicago Tribune did the same, as have many other papers. And they got in a push for the "grand bargain" at the same time (lube up, it's time for some "economic patriotism").
Won't work. WaPOS will still smell the same, squish underfoot the same, and burn in paper bags on doorsteps the same (as will the Chicago Tribune, Murdoch-owned or otherwise).
