My wife took her mother (and our eldest daughter) on a whale seeing trip for her Mom's 70th birthday last July. They were fortunate enough to see a 90-ton, blue whale near Catalina Island. Massive and magnificent creatures.
I saw one, quite close up, about twenty-five years ago off Stellwagen Bank, and they are big.
We were in a 90-ft boat, and the blue whale was as long, or slightly longer than the boat. Cruised by, going in the opposite direction, with its back about ten feet underwater.
It was a very odd sensation, looking down at that whale and seeing it look back at me... sort of a "you're on my turf now" look. :)
